Feminist Fridays: The Bawdy Trade

Join us for the Women's Resource Center lecture series, Feminist Fridays. This Friday, Assistant Professor and Librarian Dr. Victoria Elmwood will be talking about her digital humanities mapping project, The Bawdy Trade: Using Digital Mapping Software to Imagine a Century of Sex Work in New Orleans. The resource is a set of three annotated maps designed to help introduce users to the New Orleans demi-monde of brothels and other locations associated with late nineteenth and early twentieth century sex work in the city. The Bawdy Trade maps bring together a variety of digital materials and existing historical research on prostitution in New Orleans to create a (geo)graphical representation of an industry that was a significant economic and political force in the city. The talk will also provide suggestions for local and national sources of rich digital archival research.
